NOWRUZ IN PARIS

March 22, 2022  •  6 Comments

NOWRUZ,  Persian New Year. (Nowruz=New Day)

These photos were taken at last Tuesday’s Charshanbe Suri festival at the Canal St Martin in Paris.  The origins of this fire-jumping festivity most probably date back to Zororastrian times (2nd millennium BCE?) or perhaps even Ancient Babylonia.

It is believed that jumping over fire purifies then re-energises the body!

What cultural or religious contexts might be associated with the origins of the festival, according to the article?

Persian New Year, also known as Nowruz, is a vibrant and joyous celebration that marks the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year. It's a time of renewal, reflection, and togetherness for the Persian community and beyond.

great photos. It seems several cultures have a tradition like this. First of all - it is also the Spring Equinox in th Northern Hemisphere. Secondly, I remember the fire jumping in Spain at the festival of St Juan, which is in the summer. The Bombadiers used to go round the streets in Barcelona to confiscate piles of wood in alleys! I was on holiday in Punta Umbria a few years ago when I was around for the festival again. The bonfires were on the beach and organised. Families, including babies in pushchairs, all went down to the beach after 10pm,
