Muscles, Movies & Messages1984, that mythical year. That was the year when I photographed the majority of the images in this blog entry. At that time I was resident in Guangzhou (Canton) and China was buzzing at the promise of the 4 Modernizations: Agriculture, Industry, Technology & Defence and the bright new future that lay ahead. Here's a little selection from my Canton archives. As you can see, some have lost their colour over the years.

Powerful images. Certainly reflecting a different time, but not sure what the new images would be except probably more modern and crowded. Great to see you at least once in Paris. Lunch with Chiew was fabulous. Sorry you had to miss it.

J'aime particulièrement les deux photos avec cyclistes.

Thanks Brenda for sharing your works and memories. Your photos speak a thousand words and engraved the lost memories of painted posters, an era of rare artworks and expressions. Bravo !

Merci Brenda, de nous faire revivre cette Chine-là. Je m'y étais rendue comme étudiante dans des universités chinoises en 1985, ces photos me parlent beaucoup! Bravo pour les avoir retrouvées et nous les avoir proposées. A bientôt,
Marielle

Oh… takes me back to your exhibition at the Fringe in Hong Kong where François and I first met face to face. Seeing the photos now I reflect on how the muscle pix show such innocent and brave young men; the young women so fearless and somehow civilised. Communist propaganda aside, it shows a very brave new world. You took such sympathetic photos, well done.
