Downtown Macau 1987. The 2 traditional Chinese characters on this construction site read "China". As a resident on this very street. (Rua do Campo) in Macau from 1985-1987, I closely observed and photographed the growth of this site and the changes taking place all around. Macau was shedding its Portuguese / Macanese skin in the run-up to to the transfer of sovereignty. From being a laid-back destination for Hong Kong weekenders looking for Portuguese-style seafood and “vino verde”, it will soon attract gamblers from the mainland and overtake Las Vegas as the world’s largest and glitziest casino town. Since the 80’s Macau’s growth has been phenomenal. According to the IMF, it will overtake Qatar to have the highest per-capita GDP by 2020.
