The Galaxy is a massive 4-billion dollar casino resort on Macau's reclaimed Cotai strip which opened in 2011. I took this photograph in 2009,10 years after Macau was handed over to China and almost 20 years after I’d left Asia as a resident. Parts of Macau were unrecognisable. Modern Macau owes its success to China’s increased wealth, and the fact that it’s the only place in Greater China where gambling is legal. Since the 80’s, Macau’s growth has been phenomenal. It is now the largest gaming hub in the world. According to the IMF, Macau will overtake Qatar to have the world’s highest per-capita GDP by 2020.
