Rua do Campo, downtown Macau 1987. br/As a resident on this very street in Macau from 1985-1987, I closely observed and photographed the growth of this site and the changes taking place all around. Macau was shedding its Portuguese / Macanese skin in the run-up to to the transfer of sovereignty. From being a laid-back destination for Hong Kong weekenders looking for Portuguese-style seafood and ldquo;vino verderdquo;, it will soon attract gamblers from the mainland and overtake Las Vegas as the worldrsquo;s largest and glitziest casino town. Since the 80rsquo;s Macaursquo;s growth has been phenomenal. According to the IMF, it will overtake Qatar to have the highest per-capita GDP by 2020.
