The Pearl River; Dawning of a new era

The Pearl River; Dawning of a new era

Guangzhou, (Canton) China, 1984, on the banks of the Zhujiang (Pearl river), a group of friends gather to pass the time of day. China has recently been “coca-colonised”, however these workers can’t afford to drink a Coke at the recently-built White Swan hotel in the background. As a resident of Guangzhou in 1983-1984, I witnessed Guangzhou’s growth first hand with my camera and published in1987 my photography book “Canton”. 35 years later, the site where they are squatting is that of the Guangzhou restaurant. The atmosphere on the now bustling Zhujiang has drastically changed since the 1980s. Guangzhou is now part of what has come to be known as the “World’s Largest Megacity”, the “Pearl River Delta”.
