A Chinese saying claims that the Cantonese eat everything on legs except for chairs and tables and everything that flies bar planes & helicopters. Qingping Lu market in the early 1980's provided the Cantonese everything they need to satisfy their growing appetite. Depending on the season, there were lacquered dogs, snake, civet cat, owl, pangolin & other "exotic" animals. The owl " butcher resembled an owl himself, the Snake seller bore un uncanny resemblance to Bob Dylan. When I last visited Canton in 2009, the transformation was complete, the lacquered dogs had gone underground & Qingping Lu had become a pet & pet food market with all breeds of dogs, mostly fluffy ones, accessories for the growing hoards of Canto Bobos.
